The Basque predate the Indo-European speaking modern day Europeans. I have heard a lot of criticism against the American treatment of - oh take your pick. I mentioned the Basque to one of my stupid European friends - and she dismissed them as "50 years old and hardly a basis for conversation". I think ETA might have something different to say.
General Franco started the stupid campaign. Modern Spain / France / EU continues oppressive policies against ETA and Amnesty International accuses the governments of use of torture on captured ETA members.
